: The NFL draft not only provided a rocket
booster to the Steelers' offense, it might change part of their
playbook. Get ready for the arrival of the Pony backfield, a
concept that disappeared from the Steelers' playbook more than 15
years ago. The idea of lining up two runners in the same backfield
went out the window for the most part when Chuck Noll retired in
1991. Since then, the Steelers almost always paired a blocking
fullback and a TB, or deployed a one-back offense. The arrival of
Illinois RB Rashard Mendenhall in the first round of the draft
Saturday changed all that. Bruce Arians -- who called Mendenhall a
bigger, faster Edgerrin James - said he will dust off the Pony
backfield portion of the playbook he used in Cleveland and try it
next season. Mendenhall and Fast Willie Parker in the same
backfield at the same time should give defenses plenty to think
about.

on Willie Parker: On the first offensive
huddle of the first practice of the Steelers' new season, No. 39
lined up at tailback behind QB Ben Roethlisberger. Willie Parker
did nothing spectacular yesterday, unless you count the fact he
was back on the field, running and cutting with the rest of his
teammates. "Right now I'm a little shaky," Parker said, "but I'm
at full speed, cutting and all that stuff. If not 100%, I'm real
close to it."

: The Steelers finally won a crucial game on the
road, but their 41-24 victory over St. Louis last night also was a
costly one. Willie Parker left the game after his first carry with
a broken right fibula, ending his season. He was the NFL's leading
rusher entering the next-to-last game and was named Tuesday to his
second Pro Bowl. As for the injury to Parker, Tomlin said, "On a
personal note, my heart goes out to him." But, "as a football
team, we're not going to throw a pity party. Nobody cares about
our problems -- they're probably glad we have them."

: Willie Parker wore rubber sleeves on his arms
Sunday night, which John Madden said probably contributed to
Parker's 4 fumbles - two of them official and recovered by the
Bengals. "I've heard that theory," Tomlin said, "but commentators
need something to talk about throughout the course of the football
game. "The reality is that with that being excuse-making, we
aren't going to make them. We have to hold on to the ball. Willie
has to hold on to the ball. Ball security is a big part of our
program, in terms of how we try to win football games, with time
of possession being one of them. You jeopardize those things -
time of possession and field position - when you don't hold on to
the football, even if you do have a great defense, one that is
capable of getting you out of tough spots. That standard is not
going to change. You have to hold on to the football. "Tomlin said
he has no idea why Parker wore the rubber sleeves and that he will
not necessarily tell him not to.
